Brief Biography of Marianne Hoover

We will never forget unfolding a map on the kitchen table of our Frisco home and pointing to the towns we dreamed of living in. We stared at a large swath of the West, imagining what life might be like in Taos, Bozeman and everywhere between. Our eyes landed in Durango, and we remembered driving through the town years earlier.

Hiking, climbing, skiing, biking, hunting, fishing and camping- these activities had become crucial to our physical and spiritual health. In addition to continuing to live our passions, we desired things that our then home in Summit County couldn’t give us. Things like an affordable cost of living, open roads, and a solid middle-class community were features we hoped to find in our new home. Durango gave us those things, and so much more.

We live in a place with four true seasons. We wake up every morning with stunning mountains and beautiful desert landscapes a short drive away, and the luxury of having to decide which one we want to play in that day. We have met neighbors who have become great friends. A lack of big box retail stores and chain restaurants allows us to be surrounded by unique eateries and specialty retail stores. Our ski days are spent without the stressors that come with larger resorts, and they end over drinks with friends at Dante’s.

This town has given us three businesses, two dogs and an eleven-year-old son. One of those businesses is Durango Magazine. Put simply, it is our biannual love letter to Durango. Its pages feature the people, places, businesses and stories that have caused us to fall in love with this place.

Subscribe to Durango Magazine and learn more about how we came to love this community, and all of the things that make it so special. We hope to see you out on a trail, next to us on a lift or across from us at a table soon.
