4 Solid Onboarding Tips Every Manager Should Know

April 30, 2021

One of the greatest resources of any company is its workforce. For this reason, companies must hire and retain the best talent. Hiring new talent is a considerable investment for any company. The hiring cost can go up to $100k due to training and mentorship.

onboarding tips

Onboarding a new employee is more than just offering the employee their appointment letter and setting up their workspace. You should do your best to ensure the employee feels part and parcel of the company.  As such, onboarding a new team member should be a continuous process. The process should go on for weeks until the employee feels assimilated into the company. Read on to find out more about solid onboarding tips you should know as a manager.

1.   Give Your New Employee A Walk Around The Company

Giving your employee a tour of the company goes a long way in making their onboarding process easier. As you give them the tour, introduce the new employee to other colleagues. The professionals behind WorkBright point out that a person introducing themselves to new people can be nerve-wracking. But when you break the ice on behalf of the employee, it makes their onboarding process easier. When you introduce the new employee to other team members, you help them build their relationships faster.

2.   Announce The Arrival Of The New Employee Through Official Channels

The onboarding process will become easier for the new employee when you send their introduction through the official channel. State their roles, department, and any other relevant information. Add some other interesting information about the new hire. You can state their hobbies and any special skill they possess.

When you introduce the new team member in such a manner, other employees will find common ground to connect with the new employee.

3. Have A More Detailed Conversation With The New Employee

It’s not enough to have a conversation with the employee only on the day of the interview. You should sit down with the new hire on the first or near their first days at work. In this sit-down, discuss with them the company’s goals, priorities and direction. Doing so will immensely help the new employee in their onboarding process.

It can be disenchanting for a new employee to start the job when they don’t clearly understand their role in the company. The earlier you clearly explain to the new employee their roles, the faster they will start to familiarize themselves with their jobs.

Due to this clear understanding of their duties and goals, they will soon start delivering results. The more they deliver, the more their commitment to the company will grow.

4.   Present Important Information About Your Company

As a hiring manager, it will be greatly beneficial for the new employee to present some critical information about your company in a folder. Some of this information might include:

  • Valuable company information
  • Plans
  • Targets
  • Goals
  • Company achievements
  • Organizational chart

As a manager, you should have this information on the ready. All you need to do is keep it updated. Having such information will make it easier to share with any new hire who comes onboard. If you have more than one new hire, you can go through this vital company information with the new employees as a group.

onboarding tips

The hiring process is changing and becoming more robust. It’s therefore up to you as the manager to ensure your company’s onboarding process is efficient. It’s critical to make a new hire feel a part of the team as early on as possible. By following the above-stated tips, you will have a very efficient onboarding system.
