The Importance of A/B Testing in Marketing

June 24, 2022

Each year in the United States, entrepreneurs start over 600,000 businesses. Although this may seem like a substantial number, many of these companies go out of business within the first couple of years. One of the most important responsibilities you have as an entrepreneur is creating a solid digital marketing strategy.

One of the best ways to do so is to incorporate A/B testing (also known as split testing). Not quite sure how to get started? Let’s explore everything you need to know about A/B testing marketing.

How Does It Work?

A/B testing is a technique used to compare two or more versions of a web page or app to see which one performs better.

Visitors are randomly shown different versions of the page, and the version that results in the most conversions is considered the winner. As you might guess, “A” is the ‘control’ (or original) and “B” is the variation.

Why Is It Important?

Without split testing, you don’t really know which version of your page or app is getting the best results. If you’re not getting the best results, you’re losing out on potential customers and conversions.

This type of testing allows you to fine-tune your marketing strategy and get the best results possible.

How Do You Set up an A/B Test?

Now that we know what A/B testing is and why it’s important, let’s take a look at how you can set up an A/B test of your own. There are a few different steps involved in setting up an A/B test.

First, you need to decide what element you want to test. As we mentioned before, this could be anything from a headline to a CTA button.

Once you’ve decided on what you want to test, you need to create two (or more) versions of that element. For example, let’s say you want to test two different headlines for your blog post.

Version A might be “10 Ways to Make Money Online” while Version B could be “Earn an Extra $1000 Per Month with These 10 Methods.”

Once you’ve created your versions, you need to decide how you’re going to split the traffic. There are a few different methods for doing this, but the most common is to use a tool like Google Analytics.

With Google Analytics, you can create what’s called an A/B test variant. This is basically a version of your page that’s only shown to a certain percentage of visitors. So, if you want to split the traffic 50/50, you would create two variants — one for each headline.

Once you’ve created your variants, it’s time to start driving traffic to your page. You can do this through a variety of methods, including paid advertising, social media, and email marketing.

A/B Testing Marketing Is Easier to Understand Than It Seems

Although it may seem complex at first, A/B testing marketing is a relatively straightforward process. Just be sure to keep the above guidelines in mind so that you can make the most of it.
